Nuclear Solutions' Semiconductor Laser-Based Detector Awarded Patent

Washington-based Nuclear Solutions Inc. (NSOL) announced that it was awarded a US patent for technology it is developing to detect shielded nuclear weapons. The patent covers a detection technique based on semiconductor-laser mode hopping, triggered by the gravitational interaction with high specific-density nuclear materials. NSOL said its approach appears to have the potential to improve significantly on gravitational gradiometry techniques previously developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of Maryland and The Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "This newly allowed patent...Read full article

    Glossary
    detector
    1. A device designed to convert the energy of incident radiation into another form for the determination of the presence of the radiation. The device may function by electrical, photographic or visual means. 2. A device that provides an electric output that is a useful measure of the radiation that is incident on the device.
    mode hopping
Mode hopping in the context of lasers refers to a phenomenon where a laser system abruptly switches from one longitudinal mode to another. In a laser, different longitudinal modes represent distinct allowed frequencies or wavelengths of the laser cavity. These modes are the specific solutions to the laser cavity's resonant conditions. Several factors can contribute to mode hopping in a laser system: Temperature changes: Variations in temperature can affect the refractive index of the laser...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
