GigaPan Cameras Unveiled

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 27, 2007 -- A low-cost robotic device enables any digital camera to produce breathtaking gigapixel (billions of pixels) panoramas, called GigaPans. The technology, built by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in collaboration with scientists at NASA’s Ames Research Center, gives people a new way to make and share images of their environment. It is being used by students to document their communities and by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to make Civil War sites accessible on the Web. To promote further sharing of this imagery, Carnegie Mellon has launched a public Web site, www.gigapan.org,...Read full article

    digital camera
A digital camera is a device that captures and records still images or video in digital format. Unlike traditional film cameras, which use photographic film to capture and store images, digital cameras use electronic sensors to convert light into digital data that can be stored, displayed, and manipulated electronically. digital camera suppliers → Key components of a digital camera include: Image sensor: The image sensor is the electronic component that captures incoming...
    panoramic camera
A camera designed to form a continuous record of an expansive section of the horizon. The typical panoramic camera is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis. A slit opening in the film plane and the film itself are geared to move so as to keep up with the moving image. A different type of panoramic camera is used in continuous aerial photography, the film moving past a slit in the focal plane at the same velocity as the image of the ground, caused by the forward motion of the airplane. The...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
