Vulcan Heats Volumes

OXFORDSHIRE, England, Sept. 20, 2008 -- Laser fusion is a step closer after intense laser pulses from the Vulcan petawatt laser facility heated significant volumes of solid-density matter to 10 million K -- hotter than the sun. The milestone in high-energy density science was reached by an international team of physicists from Japan, the EU and the US. Previously only ultrathin layers of matter (less than 1-µm thick) had been heated to similar temperatures. The Vulcan petawatt laser facility, at the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, provides staggeringly powerful pulses of...Read full article

    laser fusion
Optical confinement of matter with high field energies intended to induce a stable nuclear fusion interaction.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
