WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., July 21, 2008 -- By using inexpensive silicon wafers instead of pricey sapphire as a foundation for creating LEDs, researchers said they have overcome a major obstacle keeping solid-state lighting from becoming more widely used. Solid-state lighting is about four times more efficient than conventional incandescent light and more environmentally friendly than compact fluorescent bulbs. If widely adopted, LED use could cut electricity consumption by 10 percent.
