The BOSS’ Dark Energy

SUNSPOT, N.M., Sept. 19, 2008 – Located on Apache Point, a mountaintop in New Mexico, a 2.5-meter telescope is mapping the universe. In fact, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has a wider field of view than any other large telescope and takes 3-D maps of about a million galaxies and quasars. Because of the SDSS, researchers and scientists now know that three-quarters of the universe consists of dark energy, whose very existence was unsuspected when telescope construction began in 1994 and was still controversial when the first Sloan survey started in 2000. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey’s 2.5-meter telescope at Apache...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
