Kopin Microdisplay Nets $3M

TAUNTON, Mass., Dec. 4, 2008 -- Kopin Corp. announced it has received a three-year, $3.1 million government contract to develop the world's highest resolution microdisplays for future vision systems, including integrated day-night weapon sights and solid-state image intensifiers. The program was awarded jointly by the US Office of Naval Research, the Marine Corps, the Army's Product Manager Soldier Sensors and Lasers, and the Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) Communications and Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC) Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate...Read full article

    image
In optics, an image is the reconstruction of light rays from a source or object when light from that source or object is passed through a system of optics and onto an image forming plane. Light rays passing through an optical system tend to either converge (real image) or diverge (virtual image) to a plane (also called the image plane) in which a visual reproduction of the object is formed. This reconstructed pictorial representation of the object is called an image.
    microdisplay
A microdisplay is a miniature electronic display technology that is designed to project visual information onto a small screen. Unlike traditional displays, microdisplays are typically very compact and often used in applications where size, weight, and power consumption are critical factors. These displays can be based on various technologies, including liquid crystal display (LCD), organic light-emitting diode (OLED), digital light processing (DLP), and others. Key characteristics and...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    pixel
A pixel, short for "picture element," is the smallest controllable element of a digital image or display. It is a fundamental unit that represents a single point in a raster image, which is a grid of pixels arranged in rows and columns. Each pixel contains information about the color and brightness of a specific point in the image. Some points about pixels include: Color and intensity: In a colored image, each pixel typically consists of three color channels: red, green, and blue (RGB). The...
    sensor
    1. A generic term for detector. 2. A complete optical/mechanical/electronic system that contains some form of radiation detector.
