Ocean Spins Off Films Div.

DUNEDIN, Fla., March 31, 2009 -- Optical sensing systems supplier Ocean Optics announced Monday that it has spun off its thin films division into a separate company called Ocean Thin Films. Ocean Optics established the division in 1999; it produces high-volume dichroic optical filters used to selectively transmit light according to its wavelength. These precision filters and other optical components can be integrated into applications such as color-changing light for architectural and entertainment installations, CCD camera and spectral imaging for scientific instrumentation, and targeting for defense applications. ...Read full article

    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    wavelength
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
