Uncovering Cosmic History

A new telescope that was launched to the edge of the atmosphere has discovered previously unidentified dust-obscured, star-forming galaxies that could help illuminate the origins of the universe. University of Miami professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences, Joshua Gundersen, is part of an international research team that built what they are calling Blast (Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope). Blast flew 120,000 feet above Antarctica, while tethered to a balloon, and discovered previously unidentified dust-obscured, star-forming galaxies. Image...Read full article

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    telescope
An afocal optical device made up of lenses or mirrors, usually with a magnification greater than unity, that renders distant objects more distinct, by enlarging their images on the retina.
