PARIS, July 14, 2009 – The Herschel Space Observatory has carried out the first test observations with all its instruments, targeting galaxies, star-forming regions and dying stars. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), the instruments provided spectacular data at their first attempt, finding water, carbon and revealing dozens of distant galaxies. Herschel, originally named FIRST (far infrared and submillimeter telescope), was renamed in honor of Sir William Herschel, who in 1800 demonstrated the existence of infrared light. The space telescope was launched on an Ariane 5 ECA rocket together with ESA's...Read full article
