FITCHBURG, Mass., Aug. 28, 2009 -- Spectral imaging instruments maker Headwall Photonics of Fitchburg will receive $2.5 million to make sensors for unmanned aerial vehicles if the proposed fiscal 2010 Department of Defense (DoD) Appropriations Act is approved by Congress and becomes law. While the funding bill was approved by the US House of Representatives July 30, the Senate still must approve its own appropriations bill, then the two pieces of legislation need to be reconciled before the joint bill goes to the president's desk for signing into law. Glossary
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    process control
The collection and analysis of data relevant to monitoring the rate and quality of industrial production, either continuously or in batches. Corrections can be made manually or automatically, via a feedback control loop.
    remote sensing
Remote sensing is a method of data collection and observation where information about objects, areas, or phenomena on Earth's surface is gathered from a distance, typically using sensors onboard satellites, aircraft, drones, or other platforms. This technique enables the monitoring and analysis of Earth's surface and atmosphere without direct physical contact. Remote sensing systems capture electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light, infrared, microwave, or radio waves) reflected or...
    spectral
Pertaining to or as a function of wavelength. Spectral quantities are evaluated at a single wavelength.
