GARCHING, Germany, Oct. 14, 2009 – New fabrication techniques have enabled the development of on-chip mechanical elements with dimensions on the nanometer scale. Their application, however, has been limited by the lack of sufficiently sensitive techniques for measuring the motion of these tiny devices, until now. A team of scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (MPQ), led by Tobias Kippenberg, leader of the Independent Junior Research Group "Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements" at MPQ and tenure track assistant professor at the EPFL Lausanne; and Jörg Kotthaus, professor at LMU Munich, have...Read full article

    Glossary
    actuator
Mechanical device intended for the translation (rotational and linear) using high precision control from electronically operated circuits. See linear actuator; rotary actuator.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
