4-D Microscopy Films Photons

PASADENA, Calif., Dec. 22, 2009 – A new technique is being used to track and image nanoscale matter in real time, allowing researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to image electrical fields produced by the interaction of electrons and photons. This technique uses four-dimensional (4-D) microscopy developed at Caltech’s Physical Biology Center for Ultrafast Science and Technology. The center is directed by Ahmed Zewail, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemistry and professor of physics at Caltech, and winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.     diffraction
    As a wavefront of light passes by an opaque edge or through an opening, secondary weaker wavefronts are generated, apparently originating at that edge. These secondary wavefronts will interfere with the primary wavefront as well as with each other to form various diffraction patterns.
    nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
