Optical Homogeneity of KAP Crystal

Mar. 31, 2010 — Another presentation made by participants at the recently held Annual Photonics Workshop (APW) 2010 in Cochin, India, was on optical homogeneity nonlinear refractive index of KAP, by the School of Physics, Bharatidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India. The study concluded that the single KAP crystal was grown by slow evaporation method. The wide bandgap energy (4.05 eV) of KAP will be very much useful in nonlinear optical (NLO) device fabrication. The optical homogeneity of the KAP crystal was studied by forming birefringence and conoscopic pattern. The parallelism,...Read full article

    birefringence
Birefringence is an optical property of certain materials that causes them to exhibit different refractive indices for light of different polarizations. In other words, when light passes through a birefringent material, it splits into two separate rays, each traveling with a different speed and direction. This phenomenon is also known as double refraction. The difference in refractive indices for the two polarizations is a characteristic feature of birefringent materials. The separation of...
    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
