Experiments with faster-than-light photons are highlighting the weird world of quantum tunneling. Researchers at the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) have boosted single photons to seemingly faster-than-light speeds through a stack of materials by adding a single, strategically placed layer. “For the first time, we experimentally show a strange effect when an increase of the overall structure length leads to a decrease in traversal time,” said Natalia Borjemscaia, a researcher at JQI, a collaboration of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
