Plastic Filter to Boost Optical Communication

TEL AVIV, Israel, May 5, 2010 — A new nano-based technology that can make computers and the Internet hundreds of times faster could make its way to the nanophotonics market within the next 5 to 10 years. Dr. Koby Scheuer of Tel Aviv University's School of Electrical Engineering developed a technology that manufactures optical devices and components. His plastic-based "filter" is made from nanometer-sized grooves embedded into the plastic. When used in fiber optic cable switches, this new device will make communication devices smaller, more flexible and more powerful, he said. "Once Americans have a fiber optics...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
