T-Ray Sublicenses Technology to TeraView

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 22, 2010 — Medical device company T-Ray Science Inc. has granted a sublicensing agreement to TeraView Ltd. of Cambridge, UK, to use certain continuous-wave (CW) terahertz technology originally patented by MIT and licensed exclusively to T-Ray. TeraView offers a range of advanced terahertz spectrometers, including the CW Spectra 400, which uses the sublicensed technology. The system generates a continuous wave that features a tunable frequency emitted and detected via a set of proprietary, fiber-fed terahertz photomixers. It is suitable for spectroscopy and imaging applications on a range of...Read full article

    Glossary
    continuous wave
Continuous wave (CW) refers to a type of signal or transmission where the signal is constant and does not vary with time. In various contexts, the term is used to describe continuous, uninterrupted oscillations or waves. Here are a few applications of the term in different fields: Electromagnetic waves: In radio communication and radar systems, a continuous wave signal is a steady oscillation of radio frequency (RF) energy. It does not involve modulation, which means the amplitude,...
    frequency
With reference to electromagnetic radiation, the number of crests of waves that pass a fixed point in a given unit of time, in light or other wave motion. Expressed in hertz or cycles per second.
    magnetic resonance imaging
An imaging technique used in radiology that is based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to produce high-quality images of the inside of the human body by imaging the nuclei of atoms within the body.
    process control
The collection and analysis of data relevant to monitoring the rate and quality of industrial production, either continuously or in batches. Corrections can be made manually or automatically, via a feedback control loop.
    scanning
The successive analysis or synthesizing of the light values or other similar characteristics of the components of a picture area, following a given method.
    spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
