‘Spintronics’ Breakthrough Promising for Computers

LAWRENCE, Kan. Aug, 27, 2010 — Using powerful lasers, researchers have now discovered a way to recognize currents of spinning electrons within a semiconductor. The discovery, dubbed “spintronics,” could lead the way to development of superior computers and electronics. The research was led by Hui Zhao, assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Kansas, and graduate student Lalani Werake. “The goal is to replace everything — from computers to memory devices — to have higher performance and less energy consumption,” said Zhao. The KU investigator...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    second-harmonic generation
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical process that occurs when two photons with the same frequency combine within a nonlinear material, resulting in the generation of a new photon with twice the frequency (and therefore half the wavelength) of the original photons. This phenomenon is a specific case of second-order nonlinear optical effects. Key points about second-harmonic generation include: Nonlinear optical process: SHG is a nonlinear optical effect, meaning that the...
