Quantum Optical Chip Ramps Up Computing

BRISTOL, England, Sept. 16, 2010 — A new approach to computing that uses a quantum optical chip could soon be used to perform complex calculations that cannot be done by today's computers, according to an international research group led by scientists from the University of Bristol. Research physicists Jonathan Matthews (left) and Kostas Poulios aligning the quantum optical chip. The photons are injected into the chip using optical fiber and requires precision alignment.
