Andy Weirich, OneChip Photonics, Inc.

Continually escalating demands for broader penetration of higher bandwidth, faster performance and rich-media applications are driving the ongoing worldwide deployment of fiber-based services. Even in the face of global economic challenges during the past two years, carriers and their equipment suppliers have experienced robust growth in the deployment of fiber-to-the-home and -building (FTTH/B) technologies. As carriers compete to provide high-speed connectivity for delivering rich multimedia content and triple-play services, passive optical network (PON) deployments have kicked into...Read full article

    Glossary
    axis
A straight line, real or imaginary, passing through a body and indicating its center; a line so positioned that various portions of an object are located symmetrically in relation to the line. See also optical axis.
    bandwidth
The range of frequencies over which a particular instrument is designed to function within specified limits. See also fiber bandwidth.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    optical bench
A support for optical parts comprising a solid bed that permits precise longitudinal movement of one component relative to the others, and a number of sliders equipped with holders for lenses, lamps, apertures, eyepieces, ground glass, etc. Scales often are provided to measure the movement of the various sliders. Some special-purpose benches carry a nodal slide and flat-field bar with a microscope carriage for lens testing. Two-dimensional benches have appeared recently that consist of a...
    photodiode
A two-electrode, radiation-sensitive junction formed in a semiconductor material in which the reverse current varies with illumination. Photodiodes are used for the detection of optical power and for the conversion of optical power to electrical power. See avalanche photodiode; PIN photodiode.
    transceiver
An instrument or system capable of both transmitting and receiving a signal.
