Hi, I’m Karen Newman, the new group publisher at Photonics Media. You and I may not have been formally introduced, but our paths have crossed – I’m certain of it.

My career in business-to-business publishing has felt like an amazing all-access pass to research and manufacturing facilities, trade shows and conference rooms in a variety of fascinating industries. I love the excitement of new ideas as much as the whir and clang of goods being produced. Now, as I immerse myself in the world of photonics and biophotonics, I find that I am already somewhat familiar with the work you do.

For example, I first learned about laser levels when publishing a magazine in the specialty construction industry. When I was probing the science of root canals, direct digital radiography was in use in endodontic research. And the experts I consulted for publications on flavor and fragrance chemistry, cosmetics and toiletries formulation, and skin care make use of a wide range of devices – from mass spectrometers to vision systems to lasers and much more – for research, product development, testing, manufacturing and treatment. So, it’s nice to see you again!

I’m excited to be part of an industry that is changing our understanding of the world and altering the way things get done in so many fields. But as I explore my newfound fascination with photonics, the industry I know best is, of course, publishing.
