Rofin-Sinar Acquires Lasag from Swatch

Industrial laser maker Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc. said Friday that it has acquired Switzerland-based laser maker Lasag AG from The Swatch Group Ltd. for an undisclosed amount of cash.

Founded in 1974, Lasag AG manufactures industrial Nd:YAG lasers for material processing. Its lasers are used for fine cutting, spot welding, drilling and scribing applications in the medical device, automotive, electronic and aerospace industries, as well as high-precision drilling and laser processing heads. The Swatch Group, which is located in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, said the sale will allow it to focus on its core watch business.

Based in Thun, Switzerland, Lasag has approximately 80 employees worldwide and maintains offices in the US, Japan, Germany and Italy. The Lasag locations in Thun and Chicago will be maintained, said Rofin-Sinar, which has its German headquarters in Hamburg and manages its US operations from Plymouth.

Rofin-Sinar President and CEO Günther Braun said the acquisition "will round off our laser source and system offering for microprocessing" and strengthen the company's position in the laser market for material processing.

Further terms of the transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, were not disclosed.
