Shining a Black Light on Coating Inspections

James Deardorff, Superior Coatings Co.

The highest-quality, longest-lasting coatings available to consumers are installed at the factory. Factory finishes are applied in a controlled environment using quality materials and highly specialized equipment. Also, prefabricated metal will never be cleaner or in better condition than when it is used to manufacture new products. The longer the original coating lasts, the higher its value to the asset and the owner. The benefits of engineered maintenance programs have proved highly successful for extending coating life and reducing life cycle painting costs; however, inspecting,...Read full article

    Glossary
    black light
Radiation from the invisible (usually ultraviolet) region of the spectrum.
    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
    nondestructive testing
Any testing method for materials and components that does not damage or destroy the test sample. Some of the methods used are x-ray, ultrasonic, electro-optic and magnetic testing.
    protective coating
A film applied to a coated or uncoated optical surface primarily for protecting this surface from mechanical abrasion, from chemical corrosion, or from both. For example, a thin layer of silicon monoxide may be added to protect an aluminized surface.
    saturation
    1. The decrease of the absorption (or gain) coefficient of a medium near some transition frequency when the power of the incident radiation near that frequency exceeds a certain value. As long as the absorption (or gain) coefficient is constant, the power absorbed (or emitted) by the medium is proportional to the incident power. However, there is always a limit to the rate at which the medium can absorb (or emit) power that is determined by the lifetimes of the energy levels involved. As this...
    ultraviolet lamp
A type of lamp that emits a high quantity of ultraviolet radiation. This may be an arc lamp encased in a bulb of a glass that is transparent to ultraviolet rays.
