The company has several systems currently in use at a customer’s facility, which is producing crystals grown in the Kyropoulos method that measure 250 mm in diameter and 400 mm in length.

The crystals are grown in the company’s model K1 Kyropoulos crystal grower, which is suitable for LED substrate production. The company began its development of the K1 in 2009, with successful development since then. It has received orders worldwide, and to satisfy the high demand, the company has ramped up tool production to ship systems out weekly.

“The unique crystal size and tool capability are quickly making Thermal Technology the industry leader in this market sector,” said Matt Mede, president and CEO of the company. “By rapidly achieving a status on par with other long-established producers, we have proven the superiority of our unique design which includes multiple, independently-controlled heating elements, weight sensors to determine the crystal’s growth rate and computerized control and data logging.”

Suitable for many high technology applications, sapphire crystals can be used as substrate wafers for high brightness blue and white LEDs. The LEDs can be used in many forms, including traffic lights, backlighting for flat panel displays of computer monitors, televisions and cell phones, and for common lighting applications such as street lights and household bulbs.
