Ultrafast Lasers for Microscopy: Flexibility Plus State-of-the-Art Performance

Applications as disparate as multimodal imaging and deep-tissue studies benefit from higher peak power and other new performance benchmarks for one-box lasers.

David Armstrong, Coherent Inc.

Nonlinear microscopic imaging techniques are playing key roles across many areas of life sciences research because they can perform high-resolution, three-dimensional spatial imaging of specific chemical targets (labeled and unlabeled) in real time and in living tissue. In turn, laser manufacturers have simplified these techniques and broadened access to them by developing “one box” ultrafast lasers that provide turnkey operation for microscopy. At first, the emphasis of these lasers was to deliver high value through ease of use and performance flexibility. But we are now...Read full article

    coherent anti-stokes raman scattering
A technique whereby two laser beams, one at an excitation wavelength and the second at a wavelength that produces Stokes Raman scattering, interact coherently in a sample, producing a strong scattered beam at the anti-Stokes wavelength.
    fluorescent protein
Fluorescent proteins are proteins that exhibit the property of fluorescence, which is the ability to absorb light at a specific wavelength and emit light at a longer wavelength. These proteins are widely used as molecular tags or markers in molecular and cellular biology to visualize and study the location, movement, and interactions of specific proteins within living cells or organisms. Key features and points about fluorescent proteins include: Fluorescence emission: Fluorescent proteins...
