Record Set for Cesium Atom Entanglement

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Aug. 22, 2011 — A record for maintaining the entanglement of the spins of two gas clouds of cesium atoms for up to an hour has been set by researchers from Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen. Entanglement, a key component in quantum communication over long distances, is very fragile and, until now, researchers had been able to maintain entanglement for only a fraction of a second. According to Albert Einstein’s “spukhafte Fernwirkung” (spooky action at a distance) phenomenon in quantum mechanics, two separate entangled systems have a ghostlike connection even...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
