Plasmonic nanoantennas promise optics with strange new abilities

Arrays of plasmonic nanoantennas can abruptly change the phase of light, potentially enabling more powerful microscopes, computers and telecommunications systems. “By abruptly changing the phase, we can dramatically modify how light propagates, and that opens up the possibility of many potential applications,” said Vladimir Shalaev, scientific director of nanophotonics at Purdue’s Birck Nanotechnology Center and a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering.     nano
    An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    reflection
    Return of radiation by a surface, without change in wavelength. The reflection may be specular, from a smooth surface; diffuse, from a rough surface or from within the specimen; or mixed, a combination of the two.
    refraction
    The bending of oblique incident rays as they pass from a medium having one refractive index into a medium with a different refractive index.
