Block MEMS to Provide LaserScan Analyzers to DoD

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., April 2, 2012 — Engineering and development company Block MEMS LLC won a contract to provide the Department of Defense its LaserScan analyzer for evaluation in the Multi-Mission Multi-Threat Detection (M3TD) Technology Evaluation program.

Under the M3TD of the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense, currently available chemical detection technology is evaluated for its ability to achieve future capability requirements.

The LaserScan, a next-generation spectrometer, incorporates widely tunable mid-IR quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). It detects and measures substances on surfaces from a standoff distance of 6 in. to 2 ft. In addition, it identifies bulk materials and detects sub-micron films based on their mid-IR absorption characteristics. Detecting explosive materials, liquid and solid chemical agents, biological agents and toxic industrial chemicals are among its applications.

Block MEMS focuses on the research and development of QCLs and QCL-based spectrometers and Fourier transform IR spectrometers for military and government customers.

Through common ownership, Block MEMS is affiliated with Block Engineering LLC, a manufacturer of spectrometers for military, government, commercial and industrial customers.
