Metamolecules switch handedness under light

A new technique that uses light to change the “handedness” of artificial molecules could benefit terahertz technology applications from biomedical research to ultrahigh-speed communications and homeland security. Using a light beam, the chirality of artificial molecules has been switched from a right-handed orientation to a left-handed one for the first time. Chirality is the distinct left or right orientation, or handedness, of some types of molecules – meaning it can take one of two mirror-image forms. Called enantiomers, the right- and left-handed forms of such...Read full article

    chirality
Chirality is a property of certain molecules and objects in which they are non-superimposable on their mirror images. In other words, a chiral object or molecule cannot be exactly superimposed onto its mirror image, much like a left and right hand. The term "chirality" comes from the Greek word cheir, meaning hand, emphasizing the handedness or asymmetry of the object or molecule. A molecule or an object with this property is said to be chiral, while its non-superimposable mirror image is...

    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
