Semrock Ships Millionth Filter

Semrock Inc., a unit of Idex Corp., recently shipped its millionth hard-coated optical filter, the company announced Wednesday.

Founded in 2000, the company began applying its hard coating filter technology to the biotechnology and optical instrumentation in 2004. Since then, its three optical filter platforms — fluorescence instrumentation and microscopy, Raman spectroscopy instrumentation and laser-based analytical instrumentation — have seen significant growth, the company said.

“In the company’s early years, few of us dared to imagine we’d ship over a million of our hard-coated, high-performance optical filters,” said General Manager Robert Beeson.

Semrock is focusing its efforts now on the imminent completion of a new high-volume production cell so it can ship the next million filters in less time than it took to ship the first million, Beeson said.

Glossary
optical filter
An optical filter is a device that selectively transmits or blocks specific wavelengths, or colors, of light. Optical filters are used to control the spectral content of light in various applications, allowing certain wavelengths to pass through while attenuating or blocking others. They play a crucial role in scientific, industrial, and consumer optical systems, influencing aspects such as color rendering, image quality, and spectral analysis. Key features and principles of optical filters...
raman spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
