BioPhotonics
Jan 2013
Thorlabs of Newton, N.J., has acquired mid-infrared laser supplier Maxion Technologies Inc. from Physical Sciences Inc. of Andover, Mass. Maxion, of College Park, Md., manufactures interband cascade and quantum cascade lasers with output in the 3- to 12-µm range. The devices can be integrated into products aimed at improving chemical sensing, free-space optical communications and infrared countermeasures. The acquisition will enable Thorlabs, a vertically integrated laser company, to manufacture semiconductor lasers with output in the 0.7- to 12-µm wavelength range for industrial sensing, medicine, life sciences, telecommunications and instrumentation. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

GLOSSARY
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
