LG Electronics of Seoul, South Korea, began accepting preorders for its 55-in. WRGB organic LED (OLED) TV in January, with deliveries expected the following month. The company is the first to launch sales of the next-generation OLED TV technology, a segment that is expected to grow to 7.2 million units by 2016, according to the market research company DisplaySearch.

LG Electronics has launched sales of its 55-in. WRGB organic LED (OLED) televisions.

The OLED TV is 0.16 in. thick and weighs less than 22 lb. The company says that its WRGB technology enables it to produce vivid, realistic pictures, and that a proprietary four-color pixel system features a white subpixel that works in conjunction with the conventional red, blue and green setup to optimize color output.

“We believe that OLED will usher in a whole new era of home entertainment,” said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG’s Home Entertainment Co., adding that the development is a “more transformational moment” than the introduction of color TV 60 years ago or of high-definition TV 15 years ago. “OLED TV is much more than just an incremental improvement to current television technology.”
