CALGARY, Alberta, Canada, Sept. 27, 2013 — The University of Calgary has announced the creation of the Institute for Quantum Science and Technology (IQST), a unit dedicated to research, training and outreach in the field of quantum science. The institute will focus on themes of quantum optics, quantum information, molecular modeling and nanotechnology. The 100-member IQST is one of only three such institutes in Canada, along with facilities at the universities of Waterloo and Toronto. “The IQST builds on four formidable research strengths at the university,” said professor Barry Sanders, director of the IQST...Read full article

    Glossary
    astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
    molecular modeling
A method of predicting the nonlinear optical effects exhibited by different molecules without synthesizing the molecules themselves.
    nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
    quantum optics
The area of optics in which quantum theory is used to describe light in discrete units or "quanta" of energy known as photons. First observed by Albert Einstein's photoelectric effect, this particle description of light is the foundation for describing the transfer of energy (i.e. absorption and emission) in light matter interaction.
