DigitalOptics Gets First Order for Smartphone Imagers

DigitalOptics Corp. (DOC) has received the first volume production purchase order for its smartphone imaging system from an OEM in China, the company said Tuesday.

DOC's mems|cam module uses MEMS technology to provide fast imaging to smartphones and is made using semiconductor processes. The module uses less power and generates less heat than voice coil motor camera modules in a smaller, thinner package. China-based smartphone OEM Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp. Ltd. placed the first order for the modules.

"Last week, several technology news blogs reported that mems|cam was first being brought to market in another smartphone platform. Those reports were inaccurate," DOC said in Tuesday's press release.

"OPPO has an excellent premium brand in China as demonstrated by the September 23 launch of the innovative N1 Smartphone platform," said John Thode, DOC president. "Integrating mems|cam modules into OPPO's best-in-class smartphones will bring an exciting computational imaging user experience that further delivers on OPPO's brand promise."

DOC is a subsidiary of Tessera Technologies Inc. In August, the company sold its micro-optics business to Flir Inc. for $15 million.
