Photographers know that good photos of children and pets can involve certain forms of coaxing: For children, you tell them to say “Cheese!” because it will look like they’re smiling; for pets, you bribe them with tasty treats to pose for a sweet second or two. Dr. Igor Siwanowicz’s subject required a very special kind of treat: single-celled organisms. But the bribe paid off, in the form of first prize – $5000 worth of Olympus equipment and serious bragging rights – in the 10th-anniversary Olympus BioScapes Digital Imaging Competition. The winners were...Read full article

    fluorescence
Fluorescence is a type of luminescence, which is the emission of light by a substance that has absorbed light or other electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, fluorescence involves the absorption of light at one wavelength and the subsequent re-emission of light at a longer wavelength. The emitted light occurs almost instantaneously and ceases when the excitation light source is removed. Key characteristics of fluorescence include: Excitation and emission wavelengths: Fluorescent materials...
    stereomicroscopy
The use of a specialized optical microscope designed to provide a more three-dimensional view of a sample. Stereomicroscopy usually uses reflected light and provides enhanced depth perception via the use of two distinct optical paths. It takes advantage of the human ability to perceive depth by transmitting twin images separated by a small angle, mimicking the way light normally enters our two eyes and yielding a stereo effect. Often, stereomicroscopes provide lower magnifications, but have...
