Laser developer and manufacturer Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc. has acquired FiLaser USA.

The acquisition brings to Rofin FiLaser’s laser process technology, used for precision cutting and drilling of brittle materials including glass, sapphire and semiconductor substrates for applications in the touch-panel display, LCD, cellphone display, LED and semiconductor markets.

Rofin has been developing, designing and manufacturing lasers and laser-based system solutions for industrial material processing applications for more than 30 years.

“The commercialization of [FiLaser] technology is an important step for the industry in improving the cutting performance of these materials and subsequently the wider use of laser technology,” said Gunther Braun, president and CEO of Rofin.

Glossary
glass
A noncrystalline, inorganic mixture of various metallic oxides fused by heating with glassifiers such as silica, or boric or phosphoric oxides. Common window or bottle glass is a mixture of soda, lime and sand, melted and cast, rolled or blown to shape. Most glasses are transparent in the visible spectrum and up to about 2.5 µm in the infrared, but some are opaque such as natural obsidian; these are, nevertheless, useful as mirror blanks. Traces of some elements such as cobalt, copper and...
