Optics Suitcase travels to students

Through its Optics Suitcase program, The Optical Society (OSA) Foundation in Washington is working to inspire a love of science and innovation among students. The program includes hands-on experiences focused on optics concepts. The foundation demonstrated the program for middle-school students as part of OSA’s annual Winter Leadership event. The presentation package is designed to introduce students to the dynamic range of concepts within the study of light. Each case includes a teaching guide and materials for interactive demonstrations and experiments covering topics such as...Read full article

    Glossary
    diffraction
As a wavefront of light passes by an opaque edge or through an opening, secondary weaker wavefronts are generated, apparently originating at that edge. These secondary wavefronts will interfere with the primary wavefront as well as with each other to form various diffraction patterns.
    polarization
Polarization refers to the orientation of oscillations in a transverse wave, such as light waves, radio waves, or other electromagnetic waves. In simpler terms, it describes the direction in which the electric field vector of a wave vibrates. Understanding polarization is important in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and physics. Key points about polarization: Transverse waves: Polarization is a concept associated with transverse waves, where the oscillations occur...
    selective reflection
The reflection in different amounts as a function of wavelength, as a result of absorption and scattering, leading to color effects if occurring in the visible wavelength region.
