Nanocrystal Tags Aid Rapid Pathogen Detection

Tunable nanoparticles could pave the way for screenings that identify thousands of target molecules simultaneously — and even detect multiple viruses within minutes. A team from Purdue University and Macquarie University used tunable luminescent nanocrystals as tags, applying them to high-speed scanning technology. The development builds on the team’s previous work, in which they discovered how to control how long nanoparticles (called tau-dots) luminesce via luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET). The lifespan of the nanoparticle light, measured in milliseconds...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
