Dow to Begin Large-Scale Manufacturing of Cadmium-Free QDs

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 24, 2014 — Dow Chemical Co. plans to begin construction of the world’s first large-scale, cadmium-free quantum dot manufacturing operation at its facility in Cheonan, South Korea. With production expected to begin in the first half of next year, the facility will enable the manufacture of millions of quantum-dot TVs and other display applications, the company said. Dow’s Trevista quantum dots are tunable for a wider color palette and improved color saturations compared to other display technologies, the company said. Dow licensed Nanoco Group plc’s cadmium-free quantum dot...Read full article

    quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
