From the unbreakably hard to the vulnerably soft – from glass, metals and ceramics to plastics and biological tissue – femtosecond lasers are being increasingly adopted for micromachining a range of materials. Femtosecond lasers are cropping up in a large number of places, and their applications are surprisingly diverse. Thanks to intense yet precise energy delivery, femtosecond lasers cause minimal damage to the surrounding material, making them ideal for industrial microstructuring, as well as for medical applications including ophthalmology, dentistry and gynecology. ...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
