Shasta Crystals Explores Fiber Laser Materials with SBIR Grant

Shasta Crystals Inc. has received $150,000 in government funding to explore materials for high-power fiber lasers.

The phase I small business innovation research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Army and Department of Defense will enable the company to perform research into the feasibility of growing and cladding doped YAG fibers of sufficient quality to improve fiber laser performance.

"Single-crystal fibers can act as an intermediate between laser crystals and doped-glass fibers to guide laser light with the efficiencies found in bulk crystals," said CEO Gisele Maxwell. "Our goal is to make a cladded flexible fiber with a core of dopant that will exhibit superior waveguiding properties."

Shasta Crystals is a crystal growth company making advanced materials for laser systems in a variety of markets including industrial, medical, scientific, military and consumer electronics. The company specializes in the use of laser-heated pedestal growth technology for rapid production of crystal fibers with a variety of dopants.
