Boeing Co. of Seattle has announced plans to purchase photonics manufacturer SVS Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., following a series of partnerships between the companies. SVS would be renamed Boeing SVS and would remain in Albuquerque as part of the aerospace company's electro-optical unit. Other terms of the agreement were not disclosed. SVS produces electro-optical systems for remote viewing and for target acquisition and tracking applications in the defense and aerospace industries. NASA selected the company in March to lead the group that will develop its Terrestrial Planet Finder project, which will identify Earth-like planets in other solar systems. Boeing has incorporated its products into the US Air Force's Airborne Laser Project.
