Universal Display Gains Organic Thin-Film Semiconductor Laser Patent

EWING, N.J., Sept 26 -- As a result of its ongoing partnership with Princeton University and The University of Southern California, Universal Display Corp. has gained the exclusive license for an Organic Semiconductor Laser patent. US patent number 6,111,902 is for a solid-state, light-emitting device that includes a thin film of organic material and functions like an inorganic semiconductor laser.
An organic laser would not only mean lower power consumption and lower manufacturing costs, but it would also have more uses than current solid-state lasers because organic substances are more easily manipulated to emit light from the UV to IR, said Universal Display.
