Robert Deuster will assume the post of chairman of the board at Newport Corp., in addition to his duties as the company's president and chief executive officer. Deuster, 46, has been with Newport since 1996. He succeeds Richard Schmidt, who is retiring from the chairmanship but who will remain as a member of the board of directors. Schmidt was the company's president, chief executive officer and chairman when he arrived at Newport in 1991.
