2D Materials Present Benefits, Challenges

The properties of 2D materials could have a substantial impact on a host of applications, from quantum communication to flexible electronics. Manufacturers are seeking materials that allow faster, more efficient systems with lower power consumption, and materials such as graphene, germanium selenium and silicone can provide that. Besides being good conductors and strong light absorbers, they are durable and can bend without breaking.

The “wonder material” graphene can work at any wavelength from the visible to the far-IR, according to industry experts. Given its optical properties, graphene can assist the development of components such as IR transceivers used for data communication. Silicone is well suited for applications such as optical telecommunication devices, which continually require higher data transmission.

However, despite their advantages, 2D materials do present some challenges. Users must retain control of surface interface, and it’s also difficult to grow large, defect-free 2D films.
