AP State Government Goes Aggressive on Solar

Aug. 10, 2010 — In India, no other state other than the southern state of Andhra Pradesh has been as aggressive in promoting, nurturing and growing solar photovoltaics-related projects. Especially, it is for the other states to emulate and follow the initiatives undertaken by the Andhra Pradesh state government in solar PV.

K. Rosaiah, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, highlighted several initiatives that have been undertaken by his government in the state during Solarcon India 2010. The Andhra Pradesh government has undertaken initiatives in developing specific areas that have high solar insolation for setting up solar power projects.

Rosaiah said, “The AP Industrial Infrastructure Corp. (APIIC) is allotting land in potential areas for development of solar power projects. Some of the potential areas identified are Kadiri in Ananthpur (2,200 acres), Gurajala in Guntur district (4,575 acres), Nennal in Adilabad district (1,008 acres), and Pulivendula and Kopparty in Kadapa district (625 acres).”

The Andhra Pradesh state government is also encouraging solar power projects by approving the recommended tariff of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). It has recommended for 0.25 percent solar energy power purchase obligation. The AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has issued tariff order in this regard.

The state government is also doing a great deal in helping solar PV players set up manufacturing facilities at Fabcity in Hyderabad. As announced during Solarcon India 2010 by Rosaiah during the event, 21 units are said to be coming up in the state at an investment of Rs 20,000 crores ($4.4 billion). These will generate employment to around 25,000 people.

The Andhra Pradesh government has also shortlisted 22 companies under the rooftop and other small solar power projects schemes for a total capacity of 20 MW. Further, the state government has also recommended eight projects that are currently under various stages of development — with total capacity of 28 MW — for migration to the JN-NSM.

Sathya Prasad, president of SEMI India, said in his address that Andhra Pradesh is now at the forefront of realizing solar in India. It is the hub of module manufacturing in India.

All of these augurs really well for the global and Indian electronics and solar PV industry. Despite some announcements made at Solarcon India 2009, this year's edition has tried to be different. Different in the sense that Andhra actually has several projects going on, as compared to 2009, with more projects to follow!
