DUNEDIN, Fla., Sept. 28, 2012 — Dr. Michael W. Allen has joined Ocean Optics as director of marketing and product development, the optical sensing products maker announced Thursday.

Allen comes to Ocean Optics from Thermo Fisher Scientific, where he served most recently as global marketing manager for its NanoDrop UV-visible and fluorescence products. Before that, he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at Louisiana State University, helping to develop microfluidic microdevices for bioanalytical applications.

In addition to directing marketing and product development for the company's miniature fiber optic spectrometers, optical sensors and other products, he will manage Ocean Optics' international marketing efforts, including trade shows, seminars and customer programs such as Blue Ocean Grants.

Allen earned a BA in chemistry from Bellarmine University and a doctorate in bioanalytical chemistry from the University of Kansas.

GLOSSARY
fluorescence
The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained. In other words, fluorescence is the luminescence that persists for less than about 10-8 s after excitation.
spectrometer
A kind of spectrograph in which some form of detector, other than a photographic film, is used to measure the distribution of radiation in a particular wavelength region.
