Barr Associates Acquires Optical Coating

Barr Associates Inc., a manufacturer of precision thin-film coatings and optical filters, announced it is acquiring the assets of Optical Coating Corp. (OCC), based in Natick, Mass. Terms were not disclosed.

Barr said the acquisition will increase its capabilities and coating capacity to better address the demand for products in the infrared wavelength region. With the acquisition, Barr will have more than 70 active coating deposition systems and 275 employees. OCC's operations will be moved from Natick to Westford and Tyngsboro, Mass., where Barr's US facilities are located and substantially all of OCC's employees will join Barr.

OCC was founded in 2002 by Dan Jasinski and 11 other former employees of Optical Filter Corp. (then called NetOptix), which was acquired by Corning Inc. in 2000.

infrared
Infrared (IR) refers to the region of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of microwaves. The infrared spectrum spans wavelengths roughly between 700 nanometers (nm) and 1 millimeter (mm). It is divided into three main subcategories: Near-infrared (NIR): Wavelengths from approximately 700 nm to 1.4 micrometers (µm). Near-infrared light is often used in telecommunications, as well as in various imaging and sensing...
