Bruker Acquires Prairie Technologies

BILLERICA, Mass., Sept. 13, 2013 — Scientific instruments provider Bruker Corp. has acquired Prairie Technologies Inc., a provider of fluorescence microscopy products. Specific terms were not disclosed.

Madison, Wis.-based Prairie generated revenues of approximately $11 million in 2012 and has approximately 30 employees globally. It offers a variety of life sciences products, including two-photon microscopes; multipoint scanning confocal microscopes; laser illumination sources; photoactivation, photostimulation and photoablation accessories; and synchronization and analysis software. Applications include uncaging experiments, optogenetics, electrophysiology studies and cell biology.

The purchase allows Bruker to enter the fluorescence microscopy market and strengthens the company’s life sciences offerings by adding to its Nano Surfaces Division’s existing life sciences atomic force microscopy (Bio-AFM) systems.

GLOSSARY
fluorescence
The emission of light or other electromagnetic radiation of longer wavelengths by a substance as a result of the absorption of some other radiation of shorter wavelengths, provided the emission continues only as long as the stimulus producing it is maintained. In other words, fluorescence is the luminescence that persists for less than about 10-8 s after excitation.
optogenetics
A discipline that combines optics and genetics to enable the use of light to stimulate and control cells in living tissue, typically neurons, which have been genetically modified to respond to light. Only the cells that have been modified to include light-sensitive proteins will be under control of the light. The ability to selectively target cells gives researchers precise control. Using light to control the excitation, inhibition and signaling pathways of specific cells or groups of...
