Coherent Awarded $29.9M Navy Contract
MURRIETA, Calif., June 13, 2025 — Coherent Aerospace & Defense has been awarded a $29.9 million contract for the U.S. Navy’s SONGBOW: Pulsed Fiber Lasers and Directed Energy Subsystems with High Bandwidth Wavefront Control Project. Per the contract, Coherent will develop pulsed fiber lasers for remote sensing and illumination and further the development of a 400-kW directed-energy subsystem by integrating a 50-kW laser with a beam-control assembly.
The work will be conducted at Coherent's site in Murrieta, Calif., with the project expected to be completed by January 2027.
The SONGBOW initiative is part of a broader U.S. Department of Navy effort to accelerate the development and field of next-generation directed-energy systems that can support a wide range of missions including counter-drone operations, precision strike support, and maritime area defense.
The contract is structured as a cost-plus-fixed-fee agreement and includes a 20-month base period, followed by an 11-month and an 18-month option, which will run concurrently. Initial funding includes $12.9 million in fiscal year 2024 research, development, test, and evaluation funds.
The contract was awarded under the long range Broad Agency Announcement for Navy and Marine Corps Science and Technology.
