SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 11, 2019 — Coherent Inc. has relocated its laser marking group and expanded its micromachining and subsystem facility from Gilching, Germany, to nearby Gunding, calling it its Center of Excellence and designating it as Coherent Munich.

The relocation and expansion will be a significant upgrade to the organization’s applications and R&D capabilities, and affirms Coherent’s commitment to the industrial materials processing and manufacturing segment.

Coherent Munich will have two primary focuses, with the first being the supply of high-performance, integration-ready laser-based subsystems servicing a wide range of precision industrial manufacturing and marking applications in medical device manufacturing, electronics packaging, and jewelry production. Specifically, this will include the development and production of fiber, CO2, and solid-state laser-based subsystems incorporating laser, optics, software, and applications expertise.

The company will secondly focus on supplying a complete product portfolio of laser machines to accomplish specific tasks, such as glass or tube cutting, precision welding of metals and polymers, black marking, and roll-to-roll packaging, among others.

These new ExactSeries offerings, which bring innovative hardware, software, and process technology to cutting, welding, marking, surface treatment, and specialty applications, are the latest embodiment of the ongoing integration of ROFIN expertise into Coherent Inc.

Thomas Merk, executive vice president and general manager of Industrial Lasers and Systems, said the company’s goal is to make industrial manufacturing more efficient and cost effective by delivering superior laser-based products that leverage Coherent’s underlying applications and process knowledge that are developed in close cooperation with customers.

“We believe the creation of this Center of Excellence will enable us to serve a broader range of applications with even more competitive subsystems and turnkey solutions,” he said.
